DECISION TO HOLD MEETING IN ROME

To achieve the dissemination, communication and outreach goals expected in such a contract with the European Commission, the partners in ESTOOLS have since the start of the project in 2006 invested much energy to spread widely the understanding of the purposes, nature, methods and results of the work in the project. The decision to hold consortium meetings and open scientific symposia in a different European country each year and to mingle with local scientists, public and the media is an important component of our public-facing efforts. In 2007 and then 2008 the consortium decided to move its "centre of gravity" to the east by holding its meetings in Brno and then in Budapest. These meetings attracted participants from states that were not in the EU before 2004 e.g. Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Further working to meet the aim of our first two years of "Advancing the frontiers of human embryonic stem cell knowledge", ESTOOLS sent its photo-exhibition Smile of a Stem Cell in 2008 to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and to two Bulgarian cities. In 2009 ESTOOLS meets in Rome to maximise the opportunity for the public and scientists and also for other stakeholders to engage with the consortium. In this penultimate year of the project, the ESTOOLS open symposium will have additional focus on communication, with several prominent experts to be invited, and the location in Rome will help achieve the ESTOOLS goal for 2009 of Dissolving the boundaries of stem cell knowledge.
