Workshop 3: Ethical Aspects of Stem Cell Research in Europe
19-20 April 2007, Berlin

The main focus of this workshop was  on ethical aspects of interspecies embryo research. The scientific, ethical and regulatory aspects that were discussed included:

  • Why do scientists want to carry out such research?
  • Are there important distinctions between different types of inter-species embryos? 
  • What ethical concerns does such research raise? How should these concerns be addressed and dealt with?

Participants

As with the first ESTOOLS ethics workshop, held jointly with EuroStemCell in Berlin in April 2007 (see this page), participants attending this workshop were from the spectrum of communities interested in or concerned by the ethical societal and regulatory issues raised by embryonic stem cell research e.g. scientists working in the area of stem cell research, lawyers, ethicists, philosophers, as well as representatives of the European Commission.
