The Ethics Advisory Panel oversees ethical, societal, safety and human as well as animal welfare issues related to the ESTOOLS project. The panel reviews any issues relating to the planned use of different human ES cell lines in different partner laboratories, giving special consideration to local laws and rules. Members of the Ethics Panel are independent. None participate in the scientific work of ESTOOLS. They are free to give whatever advice they feel appropriate. Dr Woopen's work focuses on the ethical aspects of gene technology in medicine, genetic diagnosis, reproductive medicine and stem-cell research. She is a member of the Advisory Committee to EC Joint Research Committee for the Biotechnology for Europe Study; the German National Ethics Council (since 2001); several working groups of the Advisory Council of the Medical Association of Germany which develop guidelines e.g. for the application of assisted reproductive technology; the Working Group on Ethical, Legal and Sociological Issues of the Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia. Prof. Neri is a member of the Italian National Bioethics Committee (Comitato Nazionale per la Bioetica, Roma). Previously he was member of the ad hoc Commission on stem cells research appointed by the Minister of Health Umberto Veronesi (known as the Dulbecco Commission). Further information.
The focus of Dr Testa’s lab is to explore the function of histone methylation in the establishment and maintenance of cell identity and its deregulation in cancer. We use advanced genome engineering technologies to investigate the function of selected histone methyltransferases (HMTs) both in cell culture systems (mouse embryonic stem cells) and in vivo (conditional gene targeted mice). Dr Millar is Director of the Centre for Applied Bioethics, University of Nottingham. The Centre’s research focuses on animal and biotechnology ethics with a particular interest in the development and application of ethical frameworks, including participatory biotechnology assessment tools. Dr Millar is involved in a number of EC projects (for example, FP6 Marie Curie CLONET Network ; FP7 LUPA project) and is Vice President of the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EURSAFE).
