In its 4 year of operation 2006-2010 ESTOOLS organised sets of 2-day activities - "T.E.L.E.S.C.O.P.E. events" - in high schools (target group: 16-19 years old) taking place simultaneously in two countries in the European Research Area. The focus of this pan-European educative programme was on stem cell biology and ethics with special attention to human embryonic stem cells, assisted by participants from ESTOOLS laboratories and invited speakers.
The T.E.L.E.S.C.O.P.E. activities are a way to communicate to high school students, not only interest and information about science, but also encourage them to think about the ethical issues that science, especially stem cell science raises, to formulate a balanced opinion on the basis of scientific facts and be able to put forward and defend arguments.
The programme was conceived by Sébastien Duprat, ESTOOLS Training and Outreach Manager, and Andy Mawer at Aim Higher West Yorkshire. Some materials were developed by UWE's Science Communication Unit.
The planning and implementation of activities were dependent on the free donation of advice, time, enthusiasm and energy from many within and outside the ESTOOLS network. Particular acknowledgment is given to the following who contributed to more than one TELESCOPE activity: Kristina Hug, Beata Surmacz, Veronika Ganeva.
As part of its legacy ESTOOLS has made its TELESCOPE resources available to the EuroStemCell Project in which ESTOOLS was a founding partner.
A toolkit, developed by Veronika Ganeva, is available from this ESTOOLS website.
