IEM is the leading institution in the Czech Republic for biomedical research, particularly in cell biology, neurobiology, developmental toxicology and teratology, molecular embryology, and molecular pharmacology.
Principal Investigator: Dr Petr Dvorak
The Computational Systems Biology research group in the Department of Signal Processing in Tampere University of Technology focuses on developing and applying computational tools for systems biology. This includes development and validation of software tools for systems biology e.g. image and data analysis, quantitative simulation of modern biological measurement techniques. We also develop methods for statistical inference, large scale data integration, visualization, and data mining for interpretation of biological data. This work facilitates using large scale data in applied and basic biosciences. Principal Investigator: Prof. Olli Yli-Harja
Research in Developmental and Reproductive Biology at the University of
Helsinki focuses developmental and reproductive biology relevant for
human disease, including molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology,
ES cell line derivation, viral vectors and gene transfer.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Timo Otonkoski
The Turku Centre for Biotechnology provides state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, including units specialized in transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. Systems biology approaches and tools are used to understand the molecular mechanisms of cell signalling including, for example, human ES cell pluripotency.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Riitta Lahesmaa
The Biotechnological Centre of Technische Universität Dresden has interdisciplinary focus on research and teaching in molecular bio-engineering with international groups dedicated to genomics, proteomics, biophysics, cellular machine, tissue engineering, and bioinformatics. The Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden uses basic research to regenerate model organisms and understand stem cell recruitment, activation, proliferation, homing and differentiation. The CRTD develops advanced treatments for haemato-oncological, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, diabetic and bone diseases.
Principal Investigator: Dr Konstantinos Anastassiadis
Research work at the Institute of Reconstructive Neurobiology is focused on the development of novel stem cell-based therapies for diseases of the central nervous system.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Oliver Brüstle
Research is focused on the understanding of the factors that influence division and differentiation of neural stem cells, and on the mechanism that lead to degenerative brain diseases, such as Huntington's Disease.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Elena Cattaneo
The mission of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences to complete the "biography" of living organisms on the cellular and molecular level, and to shed light on the rules that govern their behavior within their natural environments.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Nissim Benvenisty
SCT is a joint venture of two Israeli universities, The Technion and the Hebrew University. The company holds key patents in the spontaneous and induced differentiation of human ES cells and genetic manipulation of these cells, and these areas are also the focus of the company's research.
Principal Investigator: Dr Danny Kitsberg
The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) aims to create new opportunities for patient-tailored cancer treatments through basic, translational and clinical research. Combining a laboratory and hospital under one roof, the Institute encourages collaboration between scientists and clinicians.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Maarten van Lohuizen
Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) from 2009
IDIBELL aims to identify and promote its main research areas (Cancer and human molecular genetics; Neurosciences; Infectious pathology and transplantation; Growth factors, hormones and diabetes; as well as Inflammatory, chronic and degenerative diseases); to establish interrelations between basic and clinical research, epidemiology and healthcare services; and to stimulate collaboration between IDIBELL researchers and research groups and with other institutions and enterprises.
Principal Investigator: Dr Manel Esteller
The mission of the Karolinska Institute is to improve human health through research, education and information. The human ES cell team has derived 10 human ES cell lines, and has significant expertise in the development of optimal culture conditions.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Outi Hovatta
Research at the Department of Medical Ethics focuses on ethical problems in health care - including those raised by new methods, technologies and research.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Göran Hermerén
The Biozentrum is the University of Basel's basic research institute, with a dual mission of research and teaching. It's Neurobiology 'focal area' comprises a large and active community of neurobiologists.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Yves-Alain Barde
Based in Sheffield and with strong links to the University of Sheffield, Axordia is focussed on developing and commercialising a range of human ES cell technologies for research, drug discovery, and therapeutic treatments.
Principal Investigator: Dr Jim Walsh
The University of Sheffield's Centre for Stem Cell Biology undertakes academic research and provides training in stem bell biology. The Centre has extensive experience in the culture, characterisation and biology of human embryonic stem (ES) cells and their malignant counterpart embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Peter Andrews
Established in 2006, the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research has been created to bring together outstanding principal investigators to undertake ground-breaking research into the biological properties and biomedical potential of stem cells.
Principal Investigator: Prof. Austin Smith
The Institute for Stem Cell Research (ISCR) is a centre for multidisciplinary research in mammalian stem cell biology, with particular strengths in ES cell biology and foetal tissue stem cells.
Principal Investigator: Dr Andrew JH Smith
By bridging basic biology and medicine, the clinical sciences centre aims to play a leading role in the world-wide effort to develop an integrated understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease and in realising the promise of improved detection, prevention and treatment.
