The International Society for Stem Cell Research was formed in 2002 as a nonprofit organization to foster the exchange of information on stem cell research. www.isscr.org

The International Stem Cell Forum (ISCF) is made up of 14 funders of stem cell research from around the world. It was founded in January 2003 to encourage international collaboration and funding support for stem cell research, with the overall aim of promoting global good practice and accelerating progress. www.stemcellforum.org

The UK Stem Cell Bank is a repository for stem cell lines of all types. It supplies quality-assured cell lines both for basic research and for the development of clinical therapies. www.ukstemcellbank.org.uk

The UK's Medical Research Council (MRC) supports research across the biomedical spectrum, from fundamental lab-based science to clinical trials, and in all major disease areas. The MRC supports the work of several ESTOOLS partner laboratories in stem cell research.

Links with other European projects

ESTOOLS had strong links with EuroStemCell, another Framework 6 stem cell research consortium having several partners in common with ESTOOLS. Partner overlaps continue into Framework 7 projects notably EuroSyStem and NeuroStemCell and we cooperate in joint activities and resource application.

The EU Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry project was confirmed in March 2007. The main objective of this initiative, funded through the EU's Research Framework Programme, is to provide comprehensive information about all human embryonic stem cells lines available in Europe.
